The Waterfall Route

Two waterfalls, three days, one increasingly damp rain jacket.

This is the trip that got me hooked on Sri Lanka's hill country in the first place — start close to Kandy and work your way up toward Nuwara Eliya.

Both of these are reachable by tuk-tuk or a shared van from central Kandy — no tour guide required.

Bring a dry bag for your phone; I did not, and paid for it at St. Clair's.

Itinerary

Day by day

The route I actually followed — adjust the pace to however much rain you're willing to walk through.

  • 1Day 1 — St. Clair's Falls — Talawakele, on the road to Nuwara Eliya. Easiest to reach, good warm-up, tea estate views included.
  • 2Day 2 — Ramboda Falls — Pussellawa. Go early. The mist burns off by mid-morning and takes the best photos with it.
  • 3Day 3 — Slow morning, then the ride back — Legs (and the driver) will thank you for not booking a third stop.
